About Aiden James Thompson

Aiden was born four days late on the 16th August 2005 by emergency c-section he was breech. He had a perfect round head a characteristic of breech babies.

From around six to eight weeks Aiden's head shape changed quite severely, flat to the right side and sticking out on the left and his ears weren't even. When I asked the Health Visitor she spouted out a name so fast I couldn't hear it! Then she went on to say "loads of babies have funny shaped heads, it's nothing to worry about, it will sort itself out" laughing and joking she said there is actually a Funny Head clinic in Yorkhill if I felt it necessary see the Doctor.

I went straight to the Doctors as an emergency because I was so worried, she told me her little boy's head was too big for his body! "All babies have funny shaped heads, it's nothing to worry about" she would refer me if I wanted to put my mind at rest - the referral took five months, by then I knew there was nothing seriously wrong with Aiden.

At the hospital appointment the Doctor told me nothing to worry about; it will round out now that he's active. I told her that he wasn't active he couldn't roll over and couldn't move his head properly, he could only look one way but it was as if she never heard me.

I had read a little bit about helmet treatment before my appointment and thought that if the hospital felt it bad enough they would tell me if he needed one, but they didn't even tell me it was a condition!

Two weeks later I saw an article in the Sun about Plagiocephaly and head awareness week, I couldn't believe what I was reading the NHS were telling parents this was simply cosmetic and corrects itself with no actual proof that it does.

was so angry but so relieved that it was actually recognised as a condition and could be fixed. Two weeks later we were at the clinic in Leeds and it was confirmed AJ baby had Plagio and it was severe at 17mm asymmetry, two weeks after that he was fitted with his new helmet.

Since then I have been fighting with the NHS for not telling me Aiden had Plagio and for not giving me repositioning advice when he was eight weeks old. And fighting with the Scottish Executive for publicly telling parents that it will spontaneously correct itself, when they have absolutely no evidence it will. I am totally disgusted with the NHS for failing our babies.
